This week in our Local Stories series, we’re thrilled to feature Bethany and Mackenzie Mugg — the talented sister duo behind Bethany Joy Photography a wedding and lifestyle photography business inspired by their love for the Central Coast and its natural beauty. We admire their artistry and warmth so much that we’ve trusted them to capture not only our own wedding, but every special moment that’s followed. Their genuine connection, creativity, and eye for emotion shine through in every image they create.
What inspired you to start your local business here on California’s Central Coast, and what makes this community the right place for your story?
We both have been born and raised here on the central coast of California and are incredibly blessed to say so! It’s not only home for us, but provides endless opportunities with such varying landscapes. From the picturesque beaches to the rolling hills and open fields, it really is a photographer’s dream. There’s truly nothing quite like the central California coastline and makes for the perfect backdrop for not only weddings, but couples and families as well.
For locals and visitors discovering you for the first time, what should they know about your business?
First and foremost, we are a sister duo! We started our photography business together and wouldn’t have it any other way. In whatever we’re photographing, we both are always present. You can’t have one without the other! The magic is in working together, bouncing ideas off of each other, and most importantly giving our clients two perspectives of their most precious moments.
What do you feel sets your business apart, and how do you hope it adds to the local business culture of the Central Coast?
We are hybrid wedding photographers, meaning we use both digital and film mediums in our photography. Film adds such a fun and nostalgic feel to the finished gallery. It goes hand in hand with our shooting and editing style— we prioritize true to life tones when editing our images, representing how it truly looked and felt. We want the scenery to speak for itself, it’s too beautiful to change.
When you think about living and working on California’s Central Coast, what do you appreciate most about this region and its people?
The easily accessible beaches and landscapes, as well as the nearly perfect weather are definitely some of our favorite parts. You will always see the community enjoying these aspects of the coast— lots of dogs being walked, surfers, fishers, and small families simply taking advantage of the sunshine. It really is a joy to see!
We love highlighting the people behind the scenes who make a difference. Who has supported, inspired, or encouraged you along the way that you’d like to recognize?
Our family is without a doubt our biggest support. Our passion for photography began when we were just eleven and fourteen years old, our mom being the one to gift us our very first camera. Our dad prays with us before almost every shoot we have. They’ve all been there as our first source of unwavering encouragement. Our business would not be what it is without them!
