Humpbacks and orcas in Monterey Bay
October's first week out of Fisherman's Wharf logged 17 to 50 humpbacks a trip, dolphin herds into the thousands, and three different orca families passing through. Humpbacks have been feeding along the kelp, and black-footed albatross are working the swells further out.

The 80th Clam Festival in Pismo Beach
A tradition dating to 1946: a parade down Price Street Saturday at 10, live music by the pier, and the chowder cook-off, whose tickets usually sell out. Sunday starts with the Kids Clam Rescue at 11.

Santa Barbara Vintners Festival at Firestone Estate
More than 70 wineries and 20 restaurants pour in one afternoon, with a sparkling-wine lounge on the side. The Grand Tasting moved to Firestone this year in case El Niño brings early rain. It runs rain or shine.

Bonnie Raitt at Vina Robles
Bonnie Raitt brings her slide guitar to the amphitheatre in the vines east of Paso Robles, with New Orleans pianist Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen opening. October nights cool off fast out there, so bring a layer.
