Tuesday's morning boat out of Fisherman's Wharf logged twenty humpbacks, a breaching calf and sixty common dolphins; the afternoon trip found 150 more. Late-summer feeding season, the bay at its most alive — go before the fall winds arrive.

Pinedorado Days in Cambria
The Lions Club's 76th Pinedorado: parade down Main Street Saturday at 9:30, a hundred classic cars behind the Vets Hall on Sunday, and three days of barbecue, kiddie rides and a pub pouring local wine at the Pinedorado grounds.

Tablas Creek brought in its first Viognier on August 7 — a week ahead of its earliest harvest ever — and calls the fruit better and the yields lower than anyone expected. Crews pick by headlamp before dawn; by noon the West Side smells like fermenting grapes.

Johnny Blue Skies at the Santa Barbara Bowl
Sturgill Simpson, touring under his other name, plays the coast's best outdoor room in the one month the marine layer lets go of the Riviera. Gates at five; watch the sun drop from the upper bowl, then reach for the layer you swore you wouldn't need.
